Over the course of 2017, Russia’s lubricants market was characterized by the following trends:
• The year-ending results suggest that Russia’s lubricants market has stabilized, posting a minor growth, which totaled 0.2 percent. According to an RPI forecast, by 2030 the market growth could top 27.9 percent compared to 2017, and the total market size could exceed 2.2 million tons.
• In 2017, the automotive engine oil market in Russia posted minimal growth in lubricant sales (0.8 percent).
• Last year, the changes in competitive environment in the automotive engine oil market were less conspicuous than in 2014-2016, primarily due to the stabilization of Russia’s national currency, ruble, and the key players’ ability to adapt to the new market reality. Meanwhile, the companies that have manufacturing sites in Russia saw continued growth of their respective market shares.
• In mid-term perspective, we shall see a key tendency being maintained as the redistribution of shares of different engine oil sales channels continues: in 2014-2017 the market share of franchised workshops rose from 27 percent to 32 percent, and could top 40 percent by 2030. The fastest growth rate is expected in the independent service station sector, while the share of “garage” servicing is bound to decrease.
• The mid-term perspective also hold the promise of maintaining the tendency of a number of corporate clients continuing to switch to using domestically produced lubricants, including their use in foreign-made machinery.
The above-mentioned tendencies, as well as other trends and peculiarities of market development dictate the necessity of their thorough study and account when lubricant producers and distributors make operative and strategic decisions.
